Nicole Faria

To commemorate World Health Day and this year's theme of hypertension, Sunita Agarwal conducted a healthy cooking contest that saw the city's fitness freaks turn up in droves to get a dekko at some innovative cooking.

The contest saw participants cooking healthy dishes out of nine ingredients as the audience cheered them on. Sandalwood actress Soundarya Jayamala and Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria were spotted at this do, as were Sheela Krishnaswamy and Sangeetha Gopal.

I’M MORE THAN JUST A VISUAL TREAT

Simran Kaur Mundi
Simran Kaur Mundi
Former Miss India Simran Kaur Mundi, is all set to make her Tollywood debut in a Manchu Manoj starrer.

You are making your Tollywood debut with the Manchu Manoj-starrer Potugadu. Was entering the South Indian film industry always on your agenda?
I've always been attracted towards South Indian cinema and wished to work here some day. In fact, I want to work in as much regional films as possible. When the casting team of Potugadu visited Mumbai recently to audition for their lead actress, I called on them. Somehow, after meeting me, they saw their reel character in me and said I was perfect for the role. They told me that they would get back to me when they reach Hyderabad. And the next thing I know, I bagged the film! I'm pretty excited about it. I've heard about Manoj and I'm looking forward to work with him.

What's your character in the film like?
I play a traditional Brahmin girl in the film. It's a complete de-glam role and I have to wear half saris. I don't know whether my voice will be dubbed or retained, but I'm eager to learn Telugu and get my dialogues perfect. We will start shooting by mid-April in Bangalore, and I will be in Hyderabad soon.

You must be aware that in South Indian films, women are usually relegated to playing glam props...
Yes, I'm aware of that. I think it's a male-dominated industry and that's the way it is. You cannot change that. The scene was the same in Bollywood sometime back. It was only later that women-oriented films were made. So, I'm pretty sure things will change here too and more women-centric roles will be scripted. Right now I'm quite happy with my role and I have something more to do than just be a visual treat, for sure.

As a former beauty queen, you must have got dozens of Bollywood offers. But, it's been quite some time since we have seen you on the big screen.
When I won Miss India in 2008, a lot of offers came my way. But I wasn't looking at doing films then. My focus was on modelling and I walked at the biggest fashion weeks for the most reputed designers, in India and abroad, for two years. Then there was a time when I felt things were getting monotonous and I need to move on. So, the obvious move was getting into films. And I did not disappear, but was waiting to do something worthwhile. Then, the Ekta Kapoor-Bejoy Nambiar's production, Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, opposite Siddharth Gupta came my way. The moment I heard the title, I agreed to do the film. I didn't even want to hear the script. So, you'll see me in this flick which is set to release soon. Then there's a Punjabi film, Best of Luck, which will hit the screens by the mid of this year. I'll be juggling between the three industries — Hindi, Punjabi and Telugu.

Are you planning a long stint in Tollywood?
I don't look at it that way. I believe a lot in destiny. I'm not giving the typical "Miss India answer", but yes, I'm doing this project because I liked it. I won't do anything 'consciously', but now that I'm entering this market, I want to know everything. After signing Potugadu, I've been getting a lot of queries from a few production houses down South and I think it's important to know the who's who of industry, so that I could make the right choices in future.

Do you have any favourite actor from Tollywood you would like to work with?
When it comes to South Indian actors, I only know a few names who are the current heart-throbs in the industry. I really love Mahesh Babu. And when I saw his soft drink commercial, I was like 'he is so good looking!' It's my dream to work with him one day.
